British Pound Extended Losses On Tuesday

Global Markets*: On the first trading session of October 01, 2019, the benchmark indices at the Wallstreet were oscillating in red, with the broader S&P 500 index of the NYSE contracted by 36.15 points or 1.22% at 2,940.40, the price-weighted Dow Jones Industrial Average Index slumped 326.42 points or 1.21% to 26,590.41, as basic material, industrials and energy stocks plummeted at the bourse and the technology benchmark index Nasdaq Composite index fell of 89.15 points or 1.11% to 7,910.22 respectively, at the time of writing (at 06:00 PM GMT, before the US market close).

Global News*: On October 01, 2019, Wall Street fell after ISM manufacturing index came lower than previously anticipated which started whispers that the U.S. economy could be on a downward track. Bank stocks plunged again, with Bank of America lost by 1 per cent and JPMorgan Chase Bank contracted by 0.5 per cent, at the same time Citigroup was down by 0.4 per cent. Elsewhere, Spotify gained 1 per cent due to an upgrade from an analyst, while Apple gained 1 per cent again, having a simultaneous successful day in the US Stock Markets. Another tech Stock, Amazon also jumped 0.1 per cent as compared to the previous close.

S&P 500 (SPX)

Top Performers*: McCormick & Company Inc, Ulta Beauty Inc and Masco Corp are top gainers and increased by 6.08%, 5.31% and 3.29% respectively.

Worst Performers*: E*Trade Financial Corp, Charles Schwab Corp and Xilinx Inc are the top three laggards and decreased by 17.97%, 9.04% and 4.41% respectively.

NASDAQ Composite (IXIC)

Top Performers*: Sienna Biopharmaceuticals Inc, Cancer Genetics Inc, and Conformis Inc are top gainers and increased by 54.46%, 32.48% and 26.34% respectively.

Worst Performers*: China Customer Relations Cent, Minerva Neurosciences Inc and Reed’s Inc are the top three laggards and decreased by 29.96%, 23.29% and 23.08% respectively.

Top Performing Sectors*: Basic Materials (up 0.61%), Consumer Cyclicals (up 0.14%) and Technology (up 0.05%).

Worst Performing Sectors*: Financials (down 1.23%), Telecommunications Services (down 1.11%), and Energy (down 1.06%).

Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJI)

Top Performers*:  Apple Inc, Visa Inc and Johnson & Johnson are top gainers and increased by 1.21%, 1.00% and 0.69% respectively.

Worst Performers*: McDonald’s Corp, 3M Co and Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc are the top three laggards and decreased by 2.34%, 1.83% and 1.77% respectively.

European Markets: The London’s broader equity benchmark index FTSE 100 traded at 47.89 points or 0.65% lower at 7,360.32, the FTSE 250 index snapped 63.85 points or 0.32% lower at 19,872.82, and the FTSE All-Share Index ended 23.28 points or 0.57% lower at 4,038.46 respectively. Another European equity benchmark index STOXX 600 ended at 387.99, down by 5.16 points or 1.31 per cent.

European News*: British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said that he wants to secure an amended Brexit deal at an EU summit on 17-18 October and claimed that his new proposal would remove the contested insurance policy for the Irish border, but EU diplomats remained doubtful that both the parties will reach a breakthrough. The IHS Markit/CIPS UK Manufacturing Purchasing Managers Index (PMI) rose to a four-month high of 48.3, indicating that ahead of the latest Brexit deadline, British manufacturers resumed stockpiling in September. As traders became increasingly wary of a potential Brexit agreement, sterling touched a one-month low against the dollar.
